How to organise your kitchen, one zone at a time

A practical guide to planning storage around how you actually cook, clean and put things away.

Zone your kitchen by task

Group things by where you use them: cleaning kit by the sink, cutlery and utensils near the dishwasher or drying area, and prep tools close to the main worktop. Zoning cuts down on walking back and forth and makes it obvious where things go back.

The sink & cleaning zone

Keep only daily essentials out by the sink and give each a set place, so cloths and brushes can dry and the worktop stays clear. Store refills and less-used products in the cupboard below. See Sink & Cleaning.

Drawers & cupboards

Empty one drawer or shelf at a time, clear out duplicates, then sort what's left by how often you use it. Divide drawers so small items can't drift, and keep the things you reach for most at the front and at eye level. See Drawer & Cupboard Organisation.

Measure before you buy

Measure the inside width, depth and height of drawers and cupboards — not the doors — and note hinges, pipes or shelf lips that reduce usable space. Check each product's confirmed dimensions against your measurements before ordering.

The food preparation zone

Choose one stretch of worktop as your main prep area, ideally between the fridge and the hob, and keep the tools you use there every day within arm's reach. See Food Preparation.

Keeping it organised

Put things back in their zone as you go, wipe down at the end of each day, and review one drawer or cupboard a month. A system you can reset in five minutes beats a perfect one you never return to.
